Richie Hawtin and Barem at Complejo La Rural in Cordoba, Argentina (Saturday, January 8, 2011). Canadian-born, Berlin-based Richie Hawtin for two decades has navigated the space between DJ and recording artist, constructing epic swaths of spatial microedits and spartan percussion. Using everything from the Roland TR-909 drum machine and outboard EFX processors to laptops augmented by Ableton Live and Native Instruments software, Hawtin has isolated, elongated, and condensed acid-etched techno and brought it to fields, forests, black-box art spaces, and megaclubs all around the world. Starting out in Windsor, Ontario, across the river from techno's birthplace of Detroit, Michigan, Hawtin has become an ambassador for deeply conceptual electronic music, constantly promoting new means to maximize minimalism.

The basic idea of our Minus Special is quite simple: two DJs, two stories, united under the Minus umbrella. Label daddy Richie Hawtin is in the turntable business for 15 years now, has coined Detroit Techno together with Carl Craig and got his finger in the worldwide techno scene. Although he originally comes from Canada, Richie Hawtin thinks of himself as an electronic globetrotter. After all, the tall, blond DJ graces about 25 nations with his sets per year. However, he started from scratch: teenage Richie was inspired by techno from Detroit, his father’s record collection and an affinity for video games and science fiction equally. Over ten years ago, he founded the label Minus, which still supports ambitious artists and DJs of the techno scene. One of those is the Argentine whippersnapper Barem, who calls his style “ponymal techno/ponymal house”. This mystical description paraphrases groovy minimal highlights with heavy bass lines and crafty synthie-samples. Barem met Richie Hawtin in Buenos Aires in 2005. By the help of the label boss Barem made his mark and, since back then, fascinates all dance floor junkies. Barem’s and Hawtin’s pooled forces will rock your socks off, so be prepared!.
